Modified Trees: One Should Never Miss

Modified Trees: One Should Never Miss 4

Trees are the main essential and functional units of our ecosystems. Trees are found in wide varieties of shape sizes and also have different forms of produce which help the sustainability of the environment. Although trees have more subtle responsibilities, converting carbon dioxide to essential oxygen, providing raw materials like woods, a source of flowers and fruits, home to birds and other organisms are quite a few to mention.

WHAT IS MAN DOING WITH TREES

Since the usage of trees will only give man assets, he has reached the extreme zenith of tree consumption to an extent that there can be chaos in the ecosystems if nothing is done towards ‘the slavery of trees’.

Lately, a lot more research has been conducted to improve the situation of ecosystem based on the existence of trees. Few people have made them in the form of art and usage strategy.

Let us take a glimpse

Fruits are one of the man’s favorite produce, and the reason behind that is trees have a strange way to increase its progeny through its fruits making them delicious.

Sam Van Aken who is an art professor in Syracuse University located in the United States came up with the idea of modifying a tree which can fruit throughout the year. This project was called ‘tree of 40 fruits’ and it took about 5 years for him to complete.

The tree bared fruits like plums, nectarines, cherries, peaches, apricot and almonds and all the other varieties of the mentioned fruit family.

METHOD IMPLEMENTED

Initially, Sam combined variety onto the root structure on one selected tree sapling. Once the tree is grown, he started inserting budding into the branch of the tree this is called chipping grafting. He then joined various tree pieces using tapes and essential nutrients. Finally, he let the tree grow to a fully matured state.

Sam was able to modify 16 such trees in the span of 5 years.

Plant the tree of the desired type, after it has grown to a suitable height the soft buds needs to be shaped using the desired form. After the stem has reached to a suitable thickness, all the other parts are joined together by grafting them and letting them grow.

There are many products designed by this process. Furniture like chairs, table lamps, outdoor decorative, mirror frames, tables and many more.

LIVING WALLS

Projects consisting of living walls are taken up by many companies in many parts of the world. This includes growing trees or bushes into the form of compounds. These compounds are usually found in separate pieces of varied sizes grown inside fiber units. These individual pieces can be combined and planted to the ground to get the desired compound.

This method is more reliable since the compounds can be relocated and can be easily installed. These compounds have a valid minimum life of 10 years.

These instances reveal that man can once again get connect to nature and effectively utilize their products without affecting the ecosystems.
